Melvin Hanzel, D.M.D.
A native Rhode Islander began practicing with his father Dr. Harold Hanzel in 1979 He was born in Providence and was raised in Warwick. Dr. Hanzel has a Ba in biology from the University of Rhode Island and a DMD from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He completed a 2-year residency in general practice dentistry at The Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in Brooklyn NY. During his tenure at Brookdale he was the Chief Resident in Dentistry from 1978-1979. Brookdale is a teaching hospital of NYU School of Dental Medicine and Dr. Hanzel was a clinical instructor at NYU.
Dr. Hanzel is on the staff of Rhode Island Hospital and has been the Dental Consultant for the hemophilia center since 1982. He is a member of The American Dental Association, The Rhode Island Dental Association, The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the Academy of General Dentistry. He has extensive training in sedation dentistry and implant dentistry. He also has extensive training in treating medically compromised patients. His hospital training provided him with a strong background in internal medicine, implant dentistry, sedation dentistry, oral surgery, and root canal treatment. Dr. Hanzel also enjoys cosmetic dentistry and placing tooth-colored fillings. (Without mercury or silver).
Dr. Hanzel enjoys golf, playing the trumpet as well as practicing dentistry.
During his 30 plus years of practice, Dr. Hanzel has made the needs and goals of the patient a priority. Treatment is always provided in an understanding and caring manner. We treat patients not teeth and our entire philosophy is driven with this in mind.
Dr. Hanzel takes great pride in treating patients using sedation. He finds this form of treatment gratifying because he is able to comfortably treat patients who found it impossible to previously have dental care.
Dr. Hanzel unique approach to dentistry provides total oral healthcare. We treat patients in a personal and professional manner. Because of our unique approach we are often able to salvage teeth that were previously deemed unrestorative. This is accomplice with over dentures and precision attachments. We often make partial dentures that do not have metallic clasps which are cosmetic and natural looking. We use a combination of art, science and engineering to achieve beautiful long lasting results.
Dr. Richard L. Glick, D.M.D.
Dr. Richard L. Glick, “Dr. G.,” is a 1971 graduate of the Georgetown University School of Dentistry in Washington, DC. Upon graduation he spent two years in the U.S. Air Force as a dentist in the U.S. and overseas.
In June 1975, Dr. Glick completed his postdoctoral training in Periodontics and opened his practice in Cranston, Rhode Island. He was a clinical instructor at Boston University School of Dentistry Department of Periodontics under Dr. Gerald Kramer from 1975-79. Over the past 3Jyears, he has held numerous other academic positions and lectured on emerging dental techniques. He was at the forefront of implant technology and in 1985 was one of the first dentists in the area to receive accreditation to provide patients with this innovative new dental technology. Dr. Glick recently completed a 4 year term on the Northeast Board of Dental Examiners and the Rhode Island Board of Dental Examiners.
Dr. Paul M. Kaplan, D.M.D.
Dr. Paul M. Kaplan, or Dr. Root, as he is affectionately known in this area, has been practicing as an Endodontist (Root Canal Therapy Specialist) for fifteen years. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s School Of Dental Medicine, as well as the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. He received his specialty certificate in Endodontics from the University Of Buffalo School Of Dental Medicine. Additionally, while at the University of Buffalo; he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Oral Sciences for research he completed in the field of Digital Subtraction Radiography.
Dr. Kaplan has been awarded many honors, including being chosen as America’s Top Dentist in the field of Endodontics for the past 10 years in a row, and as one of Better Living Magazine’s Best Doctors for Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Dr. Kaplan has been chosen to be featured by RI Monthly Magazine as the top Endodontist in RI in their 2012 issue.
In addition to treating patients in our dental office, Dr. Kaplan is a clinical instructor and professor at Boston University’s School of Dental Medicine, where he teaches the post-graduate endodontic residents.
Away from the office, Dr. Kaplan performs cantorial concerts, teaches tennis and enjoys quiet time boating and fishing with his family. Many of his patients make mention of the “special” treatment they receive while under his care, as they are each treated to a cantorial rendition during their visit.
Dr. Kaplan is a preferred provider for very many dental insurances plans including: BCBSRI, DDMA, BCBSMA, Metlife, Aetna, Cigna, GEHA, UHC, United Concordia and Connection Dental.
Lisa Freeman, R.D.H.
Lisa has been a dental hygienist for 34 years. She graduated from the University of RI and has been practicing at Jefferson Dental for 25 years. She greatly values her relationships with her work staff and that of her patients. She has watched their family grow and now see’s the next generation of children. Lisa enjoys Narragansett Bay, gardening, traveling, and family. She worked with a dog rescue goldenhuggs for a few years. Lisa is married with two grown sons.
Peter Loring, R.D.H.
I have been in practice as a registered dental hygienist for 26 years, my first two years I spent caring for children in a pediatric dental office. In doing so, I cater to patients to make them feel safe and comfortable in the dental environment while providing the highest quality dental care and professionalism.
I love to travel and to be involved in many sports activities. I also hold a black belt in Tae Kwon DO but the most important thing in my life is family and friends.
Jamie Grenkiewicz, R.D.H.
Graduated from CCRI’s dental hygiene program in 2002. Has been working as a dental hygienist for 17 years. I recently completed continuing education in general anesthesia/Nit ox and received my anesthesia license in 2016. As a hygienist, I enjoy getting to know my patients and look forward to catching up with them every six months, as well as providing my patients with good oral hygiene care. I have two beautiful daughters and a wonderful fiancé who I love spending most of my time with.

Graduated from CCRI in 2006. Has been dental assisting for 14 years. I’m married and have a daughter. I love reading, and spending time with my beautiful family!
Shelly Flaherty, Dental Assistant
Started working as a dental assistant 35 years ago as an after-school job. Since then I’ve chairside assisted in general dentistry, oral surgery, and perio. I have extensive experience on multiple levels from basic procedures to surgical procedures. I was born and raised in Warwick RI. I attended Chamberlain college where I received an associate degree in Interior design. My hobbies include gardening, reading, caring for my chickens, and bird watching. I’m married, have two teenage girls, a shitz shu and a rescued border collie. My happy place is sitting in my backyard after work watching my chickens forage in the garden.
Stephanie, Dental Assistant
Stephanie have been a dental assistant for 5 years. She is originally from Massachusetts but moved to Rhode Island 3 years ago. Stephanie loves the beach and going to state parks. She has been to every state park in Rhode Island. On her downtime, she likes to read and walk her sheltie Brady.

Prior to working for Jefferson dental associates, I worked as a dental assistant for approximately 13 years. I’ve been happily married to my childhood best friend for 7 years. I have 2 children and a dog. I enjoy reading, sewing, and collecting rocks. As a dental receptionist, I enjoy helping patients with questions and concerns regarding treatment, insurance, etc.
